Mark Cullen: The Music

High School Days

(Mark Cullen)
December 13, 2003
with Mark DeFeis on autoharp & harmony vocals
The first half of this tune was recorded in 1973 at Cavern Studios in Independence, Missouri ,with former M.C. & DeFeis partner, Mark DeFeis in an audition for the former Delta Sound Corp. (Delta Records)Possessing only half of the original audition recording, I took the original recording, transferred it, and re-mastered it to digital. I then re-wrote the lyrics in the second half of the song and recorded it, then cross faded the new second half onto the original. It is the one song on the album that proved to be the most technically challenging and the most fun. It truly spans a thirty year period and boy did it bring back some memories...

Friends, relatives, parents, and graduating seniors. We welcome you to this years commencement exercises for our graduating seniors of ninetenn-seventy ?? We now urge you to join with us in this solemn occasion as we sing the alma mater.

I remember Mary Ann / her freckled face smiling / as I dipped her pony tail in the ink / high school days, examinations / going steady, spring vacations / memories that bring back a smile.

And my high school days sometimes make me frown / when I think of all the lonely times I couldn't talk it out / because our teacher / like a fool/was lecturing / and no one was listening.

We had good times my friends and I / 'causing trouble in the study hall / doing it every chance we got / homecoming dances, party crashing / football players clean cut and dashing / I remember it all

And my high school days sometimes make me frown / when I think of all the lonely times I couldn't talk it out / because our teacher / like a fool / was lecturing / and no one was listening

It was the middle of May / the time was near / and everyone was getting scared but me / I was glad to get out / the good times I remember well / but the bad times I thought were pure hell / if I'd only known then what I know now

I checked in my cap and gown / to get that piece of paper / Dad said, "son, your education's just begun / you're out,my boy, and on your own / for twelve long years this was your home" / and when I look back I see that he was right

And my high school days sometimes make me frown / when I think of all the wasted time I spent fooling around / while our teacher, staying cool, was lecturing / and I wasn't listening / no I wasn't listening

We'd like to thank you for attending this years commencement exercises for our, now, graduated seniors of 2003. And we of the faculty and staff would just like to say that we feel extremely proud of the academic accomplishments of this graduating class. Thank you.
