Mark Cullen: The Music

Company Fool

(Mark Cullen)
December 13, 2003
Caught up in the midst of a lay off situation in my other life with the local phone company, I wrote this bluesy song about the cost of putting money ahead of happiness and the sometimes foolhardy belief that hard work and long hours automatically mean financial and job security....
**************************************
He makes a livin' working sixty hours a week / can't even find the time to rock his kids to sleep / he doesn't care about the job or the satisfaction / more cash for the 401k and that someday soon vacation

But when his job gets cut he'll bleed / he'll get on his knees and plead / but who's gonna give a damn / when he goes broke he'll cry / he'll look up and wonder why / the dream's slippin' through his hands / his hopes have all gone wrong / in believing this is all / caught in a corporate attitude / secure in an empty platitude / he's still alone / company fool

He works the thankless days just hoping for that bonus / selling the only life he has to a company that cares less / the dollar is absolute but do they have to be so cruel / the budget comes first for better or worse / who the hell made up the rules

But when he gets cut he'll bleed / he'll get on his knees and plead / but who's gonna give a damn / when he goes down he'll cry / he'll look up and wonder why / the dream's slippin' through his hands / his hopes have all gone wrong / in believing this is all / caught in a corporate attitude / secure in an empty platitude / he's still alone / company fool

company fool / all he thinks about is hoping for the bonus / company fool / he works the thankless days / company fool / selling the life he has / company fool / oh, but they care less / company fool / who the hell made up the rules
