Mark Cullen: The Music
In The Moment
(Mark Cullen)
December 13, 2003
The title track was written about my youngest son, Michael, who died in 1987 at the age of nine after having endured repeated hospitalizations resulting from a birth injury that caused a subdural hematoma which hemorrhaged a month after he was born. To the uninitiated this type of brain injury was commonly referred to with the catchall phrase "cerebral palsy". Michael was never able to walk or talk but he was loved dearly by those of us who knew him. He proved to be an inspiration in more ways than one. It took many years before I could finally bring myself to write about him. And even though he's in a better place, I still miss him....

Your name engraved in stone beneath the leaves of a cold barren tree / a testament to a life too short / and the life you never got to lead / I stand here looking down / knowing / that you're not really here / and yet you're always near
You've shown me what it means to be / in the moment / where yesterday won't bring you down / tomorrow never comes around / it makes me wish that I could live / in the moment / so the memories of your life / would not haunt me
You were born into this world struggling / against all the odds / in spite of all the miracles the plan for you / was only known to God / were you here to teach me all the veracity / that I should see clear / it must be why you're always near
You've shown me what it means to be / in the moment / where yesterday won't bring you down / tomorrow never comes around / it makes me wish that I could live / in the moment / so the memories of your life / would not haunt me/ and they haunt me
Your name engraved in stone beneath the leaves of a cold barren tree / that old famliar emptiness spreads like a stain / in my selfish need / I stand here looking down / knowing / heaven's a better place / but the tears still dampen my face
You've shown me what it means to be / in the moment / where memories won't bring you down / tomorrow never comes around / you've shown me what it means to live / you've shown me what it means to give / you've shown what it means to have you / in the moment / in the moment I'll see you again / someday
